Competency Goal 1
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy, learning environment.
Function Area 1: Safe
One of my goals in the functional area of safe is to eliminate as much possibility of injury as possible. This goal is a very important one, because it is applies to all children no matter the age. Supervising the children is very important, but that does not always stop accidents from happening. In order to further protect the children’s safety the equipment the children use must be as safe as possible. A large step to achieving this goal is to keep equipment up to date. When something is damaged it must be fixed or replaced. To be aware of something that is damaged or broken a regular check of the equipment must be done. Another way to make sure the equipment is safe for the children to play on or with, is to put protective coverings over the pointy edges.
Functional Area 2: Healthy
One of my goals for the functional area of healthy is to provide healthy choices for the children. These healthy choices are given through meals, physical activity, and a calm environment. Each meal for the children will be well thought-out and the proper amount of nutrition for the day will be the guidelines for the menu. Physical activity will be provided through planned out activities and also through opportunities during free play. Planned and unplanned physical activities will be performed indoor and outdoor. A calm environment will be provided by the teacher having a positive attitude and encouraging others to do so also. Having a healthy environment also includes keeping everything as germ free as possible. Children have plenty of germs and they spread so easily. Keeping the equipment that is used clean is very important. The best way to keep the germs away is to clean the surfaces with disinfectant products. These supplies must be kept locked in a cabinet and out of reach of the children.
Functional Area 3: Learning Environments
One of my goals in the functional area of Learning Environments is to provide educational materials. All the toys and equipment must be well thought out and must all serve a purpose. In order for the environment to be as educational as possible, structured lesson plans should be made. The teacher must think about the developmentally appropriate activities for the children to perform.
