My Closing Statement
I chose to attend J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College to further my education and to gain as much knowledge as possible. I achieved exactly what I wanted to by attending classes at the school. I attended a class that put focus on language arts for young children. In this class I learned techniques and different types of activities to further children language arts activities. I also participated in a class that taught me ways to help children learn to read. Some courses put focus on music and movement and during those I learned fun songs and finger plays that I can use while I teach my classes. Every class has offered me something I had not known about. The class that I gained the most information in was the guiding of behavior. There were so many techniques I learned and so much that the class made me realize I had been doing wrong. The class that I enjoyed the most put complete focus on children with disabilities. In that coarse I learned about all different disabilities and how to work with children with them. I would love to work with children with disabilities, so this class had my full interest. Throughout all the courses I took one put focus on the different models of early childhood programs and this was very useful. I learned the different ways children can learn through the materials. Because my main goal is to become a director of a child care center the class that focused on the administration of the child care programs was a course that gave me much knowledge and techniques that I am guaranteed to use. Throughout all the classes I have taken so far child psychology has to be the most difficult one. One class that will benefit me when working with children yet help myself as well, was a nutrition course that informed me of what children/adults should be eating and the proper amount they should have daily. Though I learned a lot, this course was quite a challenge. What courses you take a very important, but my professors played a big part in my success. My professors were not only who taught me all I needed to know for my career, but they helped through everyday situations of being a college student and facing life/being a mother. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend college and for all those who helped me be as successful as possible.
I have experienced much growth through my college experience, not only as a person, but as a professional. I have learned how I need to present myself to those who might hire me and also to the parents I may one day be working with. I have also learned how to be organized with lesson plans and paperwork. I want to further my training in any way possible. The greatest way I have grown professionally is my attitude towards all challenges and even rewards. I now know that having a positive outlook on things is very important and the best way to get through them. How to deal with parents has always been a struggle of mine, but after completing the courses I have, I now understand the way you should communicate with others.
I plan to move forward with my career by hopefully finding a full time potion at a child care center. I would like to work closely with children with disabilities, so finding something in that area is my main goal. I have suffered a disability all my life and I know how to overcome the challenges. I would love the opportunity to help even just one child get through the struggles.
The process of this portfolio was very challenging. There were many points that I had not set back and really thought about. I am glad I had to complete the process. It taught me much about my goals and the ways I would like to achieve them. I also found many resources and how to better find resources that could be very helpful for me and also for the parents I may work with.
