Competency Statement 4
To establish positive and productive relationships with families.
Functional Area 1: Families
One of my goals of the functional area of families is to establish a positive relationship with the family. This goal can be achieved by staying positive for any situation I may get into with the families. Another way to achieve this goal is to keep the parents involved with decision making. Letting the parents help you plan the meals, or make suggestions of all type will let the families know you value their opinion. When meetings are held to make changes to the program, leave them as an open invitation, so that parents can be able to attend. Examples of the types of decisions can parents can help make are menu ideas, equipment upgrades, and changes/adding any large activities. Another one of my goals for the functional area of families is to establish a productive relationship with families is to provide many opportunities for family members to volunteer. The best way I can keep families involved is to give them a lot of chances to help out. The families can volunteer for onsite things such as field trips, field day, book reading, art projects, etc. There are some volunteer options that parent can participate in from the comfort of their own home. My program will do such things as collect can tabs, box tops for education, coats to donate, etc. We also want to encourage parents to give us new suggestions of charities or any organization we can help. The final way to achieve these goals is to put much focus on my communication with the families. How I handle situations where the family must be contacted is very important. Having a positive attitude even if the situation involves something negative is very important.
